Will you be the Church?

Posted by Jake Thornhill, Jr. on

Coronavirus! The word is on the tip of every tongue. It’s heard on every TV station, every radio station and in every conversation worldwide. The phrase “social distancing” is now a common phrase we often hear. Yet we as followers of Christ have been called to gather, to fellowship, to encourage, to challenge and to motivate one another.

These are difficult and different days. But they are also days of great opportunity to live out our faith, to look up to our Savior and our soon coming King, and to look out to those who are hurting, confused and fearful! Sometimes we forget, but our Lord said, “In the world your will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:31)

Some are asking what are we doing as a church, but that’s the wrong question. The right question is, "What am I doing as the church?" For years we’ve sat in classes and worship services and been taught God’s truth. Now it’s time to step out by faith and to flesh out our faith.

As a staff, we have fasted, prayed and met seeking our Lord and His direction for His church.

We have streamed online services and recorded video devotionals. We have explored opportunities to provide food and personal hygiene kits to homeless children and single parent homes that are in need. Our entire staff has joined Pastor Deon and the wonderful volunteers at Life on Lexington who distribute food. This week, 9,551 pounds of food were distributed with a wholesale value estimated at $15,472.62.

We’ve also established a response page for you on our website so you can share with us any ideas, suggestions and resources you think might help us be more proactive during this time.

Allow me to give you a few suggestions of how you and your family can be the church.

  • Invite another family or two to join you on Sunday morning to worship online.
  • Contact those that are in your Life Group or LCC people you usually hang out with. Ask how they are doing, and offer to pray with them.
  • Download the Nextdoor app(Available on Apple and Android) This app will provide you information of what’s going on in your community. If you go to the “Help Map” tab, you can volunteer to help others and meet needs in your community. What an opportunity to serve others in your neighborhood!
  • Many are tired of being cooped up in their homes and are going outside and walking. This is a great opportunity to prayer walk, praying for homes. You can talk with others who may be out walking also. You can knock on doors and ask your neighbor if there is anything you can lift up in prayer for them and their family.

We’ve been asking God how to impact our neighborhoods with the love of Jesus, and He’s provided an unprecedented opportunity. The question is, “Will you be the the church?”

The question is, “Will you be the church?”

It’s time to get out of our holy huddle and live out what we say we believe. If you’re so fearful that you’re afraid to walk out of your house, you may need to open up your Bible. Hang out a little with God, and I believe He will confirm everything I’ve shared with you. Remember the question: “What am I doing as the church?”

May the words of these great men of God ring out during these days:

William Carey, “Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God!"

Jim Elliot, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose.”

DL Moody, “The world has yet to see what God can do with one person wholly committed to Him.”

John Wesley, “Give me 100 men who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God, and I will shake the world for Jesus!”

For the King and His Kingdom,

Pastor Jake
